Qualifications: ACCA trainee
Area of work: business advisory

I wanted to try an alternative to pure audit work and still gain an accounting qualification that was well known in the industry – so I applied for a business advisory position, studying towards the ACCA.

My job

I spend most of my time helping to prepare accounts for clients. I might have to create their accounts from scratch, which entails sorting through documents and inputting the data into a document that can be easily analysed.
Some clients create their accounts themselves, which might seem like less work but often means there is more room for mistakes. In this case, I will need to verify and check these documents for accuracy.

It can be difficult working and studying at the same time but it definitely has its advantages. My experience is directly relevant to the exam questions, I have lots of time off to study and my degree in accounting means I can bypass five out of fourteen exams.

Diversity of clients

I could be working with a high-profile yacht merchant one day and then a scrap yard worker the next. The type of people you meet and the way in which they keep their accounts can differ dramatically, making the job a lot more interesting.
