Emergency planners do not need any specific formal qualifications but a good general education is important. Coventry University has recently developed a diploma in emergency planning, in conjunction with the Emergency Planning Society, which could build up your skills and make it easier to find a job. The job does require certain qualities: the ability to remain calm under pressure; organisation, management and leadership; and excellent communication skills. Experience in emergency planning or work for humanitarian organisations may be advantageous.
National emergency planning is overseen by the Cabinet Office but each local authority has responsibility for its own area. Emergency planning officers are employed directly by local authorities, who advertise vacancies on their websites.
