Jargon buster for graduate art and design careers

The art and design sector is full of acronyms. Get to grips with the terms you need to know for your graduate career.

Bmp Bitmap – standard bit-mapped graphics format.

CAD Computer aided design

CMYK Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black process colours – a colour model describing the separate colour plates used in full colour printing, CMYK values are given as percentages to make up a full range of colours

Gif Graphics interchange format – a bit-mapped graphics file format, limited to 256 colours, more effective for scanned images such as illustrations rather than colour photographic images

Jpeg (or JPG) Joint Photographic Experts Group – compressed image format, can significantly compress file sizes but some image definition is lost, useful for web images to decrease download times

Mono Black and white only

RGB Red, Green and Blue – the colour model used for display devices, when designing for the web rather than print. It is difficult to accurately convert RGB colours into CMYK colours

Spot Colour One additional colour plate used in addition to black in print design

Tif (or TIFF) Tagged image file format – one of the most widely used file formats for storing bit-mapped images

YBA Young British Artists – a group of experimental artists who were popular from the sixties onwards. Also commonly referred to as 'Britart'.
