While at university I worked part time in a retail bank: I gained customer service experience and the work sparked my interest in investment banking as I found the products interesting and could see how it would work at a higher level. I wanted to play to my strengths when choosing a career path and felt that my interpersonal and communication skills would be useful in operations.
I work in the client services group within a full-service investment bank. In this role I provide client services for listed derivatives – generally speaking, product futures and options. As part of this I deal with clients on a daily basis and am personally responsible for looking after a number of client accounts. It’s a two-way process: we send out statements to clients and ‘margin’ their accounts (this means that if they are in credit or deficit for a certain amount then I let them know and ask what they would like to do with it) but we’re also there to answer their questions about anything from trades to contact details and fulfil their needs.
Generally, I manage their accounts – much like a personal banking account but on a larger scale. It’s a customer service type role in which I often need to liaise with different departments. There’s a lot of ongoing work but projects come up too, which might involve research or development for new products or processes.
I do a range of work and of course some tasks can be more tedious than others. But what I enjoy most is dealing with clients. Building relationships is satisfying as I feel it’s important that the client has a point of contact to go to with any questions.
