Amy Dymock

Investment analyst

Name: Amy Dymock
Employer: Baillie Gifford
University: University of Cambridge
Subject: land economy

After graduating, I spent a year in Washington DC working for a small consulting firm that helped not-for-profit organisations to secure funding. I also gained work experience at two surveying firms, and completed a two-month internship at Baillie Gifford. I found out about my company initially through a financial careers fair at university, and was offered the job after two rounds of interviews with an HR manager and an investment graduate recruiter. The idea of working in Edinburgh, for a smaller organisation, appealed to me.

My job

I tend to start work between 8.00 am and 8.30 am, and finish at 6.00 pm. I rarely have to work any later. I deal mostly with media and retail companies in Japan. Each day, I check any news relevant to that sector, research individual company reports and collate information from larger banks, resent reports to my team and take part in internal meetings, eg with analysts. My colleagues tend to be relatively young, and from diverse degree backgrounds so everyone can offer different skills, approaches and strengths.

Life beyond work

There are only 100 people in the investment part of the company so we’ve all got to know each other well, which makes working together as a team easier. There are plenty of social events organised at work, such as 5-a-side football, a mixed hockey league, golf days and barbeques.
