Name: Rory Hyland
Job: Business analyst
Employer: Credit Suisse
University: MBS Business Information Systems, University College Cork (2004)

I researched technology roles in various industries and friends working in investment banking told me about opportunities in the industry. When job-hunting, I was looking primarily for a welcoming environment; I always paid special attention to the attitude of employees. I was also interested in the career development opportunities offered – that internal mobility and travel opportunities would be available. I undertook a one-year industrial placement at Credit Suisse prior to joining the graduate programme, which ultimately led to my securing a permanent role.

My job

I work within finance IT in my organisation’s main UK office in Canary Wharf. Our office is open plan and can be bustling and interactive. I typically work from 8.30 am to 6.00 pm; this can and does change depending on the nature of my work. I work mostly with my extended team and department in London. There is also frequent interaction with teams in New York and Singapore, our business clients and teams from other departments. I enjoy the variety of business processes and technologies that we encounter and need to understand. Navigating time zones, on the other hand, can be difficult; especially when deadlines are looming. The work/life balance in finance IT is very good. Social events are organised and well attended.

Communication skills

It is important that you can clearly communicate what you need, and what is asked of you, in any medium. The ability to work in a team and with people from different cultures, backgrounds and locations is essential.
