European commodities broker

Name: Victoria Adams
Job: European commodities broker

Interning at ICAP gave me an insight into what inter-dealer broking is and whether it would be a suitable role for me. It was a good opportunity to assess which markets would suit me best – each market requires different skills and personalities. I was looking to join a team that would enable me to use my languages and progress quickly.

My job

I mainly broker Dutch and French natural gas; working in European natural gas lets me use my language skills and has since encouraged me to learn new ones. At the desk by 7.00 am, I speak to my clients and prepare for the market to open. Regular contact with clients is important, be it by telephone or over the occasional lunch or dinner – much of the job relies on your social skills. I typically leave the office at 5.30 pm, but entertain clients at least one night per week. I tend to travel once a month, mainly to Geneva, Brussels, Paris, Amsterdam or Dusseldorf.

Here’s the deal

Broking is a competitive, energetic and challenging role. You have to be decisive, adaptable, capable of working in a fast-paced environment and willing to put in the hours. I like the straight talk, but you do need self-confidence and a strong voice.
