Name: Allison Mouney
Job: Graduate engineer
Area of work: Risk management
Employer: Mott MacDonald
Qualifications: BSc electrical engineering, Louisiana State University
I took electrical engineering at university because I was good at maths and was interested in engineering. I spent a year of my studies in Swansea and on graduating decided to return to the UK. I applied to a number of companies and was offered a position with Mott MacDonald in its risk and opportunity division. Since joining the company I’ve learned from those around me and from experiences on projects. I enjoy the work and it also offers a good grounding for other work such as project management.
I am working on a large communications project, facilitating the management of risk. This means helping project members to put into place a process for identifying risks, such as technical, commercial or financial risks, and actions to mitigate them. It is important to understand the technical side of projects to enable you to see the bigger picture.
I enjoy the daily contact with people – I don’t just sit behind a desk. I get to interact with clients and go to meetings. However, risk is not everyone’s priority, which can mean having to chase people and rearrange meetings. The work can be quite demanding and time scales are tight – this is not an area for people who are disorganised or have bad time management!
