Andy Taylor

graduate engineer - bridges

Name: Andy Taylor
Job: Graduate engineer
Area of work: Bridges
Employer: Gifford
Qualifications: MEng civil engineering, University of Southampton

Maths was my favourite subject at school, and I decided early on that I wanted a career where I could apply my mathematical skills. My grandfather was a civil engineer and this influenced my choice to study civil engineering at university. I particularly enjoyed structural calculations so I opted to specialise straight away and work in bridge design after graduation.

'It's always worth sending off your CV to an employer: applying for sponsorship or a placement can lead to a job.'

Make drawings come to life

Since joining the bridge team in Southampton, I have been working on new designs as well as maintenance schemes for existing bridges. My daily activities involve making design calculations, writing and proofreading reports, liaising with colleagues and reviewing drawings. I also provide support and guidance to new members of the team – I think it helps to have a young mentor to bridge the gap to senior employees.

I recently finished a project designing bridges for a dual carriageway in Ireland. It was great to go on a site visit to see my drawings become reality.

Apply for jobs early

My top tip for students who wish to work in civil engineering is to apply directly to companies as soon as possible. Applying for student sponsorship or summer placements can often lead to future graduate employment, so it’s always worth sending off your CV.
