Angus Pang

graduate trainee - rail

Name: Angus Pang
Job: Graduate trainee
Area of work: Rail
Employer: Metronet Rail
Qualifications: MEng civil and environmental engineering, Imperial College London

I started looking for jobs quite early and I wanted to work on large-scale civils projects. At university I became interested in transport management, so I investigated careers in the rail sector.

Working on the Tube

On the graduate programme I work in a range of areas and change placements every few months. My first placement focused on civil and structural maintenance and I’m currently working with the track inspection unit. In both roles I’ve used my management skills and I’ve found that teamwork is essential. Engineers have to work together to maintain and advance the network’s capabilities and environment, and keep it safe and reliable.

An operational railway will always present challenges of timing when engineering work and inspections can be carried out. I have opted to work rotational night shifts to better understand this and to gain an insight into the operational side of the organisation. We are focused on completing our work before the trains start running: the camaraderie is great.

Places the public never sees

I’ve found working on the underground network interesting and challenging: it’s vast and the systems are complex. I feel that the work I do has an incredible public benefit and I also see places the general public never sees! I’m getting a wide range of experience that will be vital for achieving chartered status.
