The Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES) was formed to represent surveyors working primarily on civil engineering projects, since existing institutions were focused on building projects.
An associated institution to the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the ICES promotes the profession and is relevant for people working in commercial management (covering quantity surveying, estimating procurement, project management, planning, construction economics, engineering and construction law) and geospatial engineering surveying (covering engineering surveying, land surveying, photogrammetry, remote sensing, geographical information systems, cartography/visualisation and hydrographic surveying). It is the only qualifying body dedicated exclusively to the education and training of those working within these specialist fields.
The institution provides a forum for exchanging ideas and information, organising events on matters of technical interest and producing regular papers and publications on topical matters. It also provides technical and professional qualifications for civil engineering surveyors that are recognised throughout the construction industry and arranges continuing professional development (CPD) activities and regional association events.
Membership is awarded to those who fulfil specific academic and work experience requirements. You can become a student member while studying on a full-time approved course. The institution issues guidelines for appropriate structured training and runs a wide range of courses and workshops. Find out more about requirements and training for membership and employers that offer ICES approved training schemes at www.cices.org
Paul Brown is education, training and membership officer at the Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors.
