Alex Donnelly

Site engineer – construction

NAME Alex Donnelly
JOB Site engineer
AREA OF WORK Construction management
EMPLOYER Bouygues UK
QUALIFICATIONS BSc construction management, Southampton Solent University

When I started thinking about my career after university I thought construction management sounded dynamic and I wasn’t wrong. One minute I’m in an office with James from Scotland and the next I’m on a rooftop working in the sun with Vullent from Albania.

My job

I joined my company last year and my role is to assist the senior engineers of the building envelope (the exterior assembly that encloses the interior space of a building) and mechanical and electrical ‘packages’. I manage subcontractors on site, solving problems that arise. Problem solving is the biggest part of my job and you need a logical mind to keep processes to deadline. I also ensure all company procedures are followed correctly.

My current project is a school and it’s great to see how excited the kids are when they visit. Working with people of many different nationalities makes the work fun. Getting out of bed in the winter to go to a muddy building site is probably the least appealing aspect of the job but I forget all about it as soon as summer arrives.

My future

I’m on my way to accreditation and I’m focusing on gaining as much knowledge as I can to progress to a senior engineering position. I’d like to come as close to being a project director as soon as possible, as this is a job you can only do when you’re truly ready.
