Aman Kasturia

Assistant design manager

NAME Aman Kasturia
JOB Assistant design manager
AREA OF WORK Architecture
EMPLOYER Multiplex Constructions UK Ltd
QUALIFICATIONS MSc construction management, University of Birmingham (2005)

I used construction-related careers publications from the careers centre at university and internet searches to research big construction companies working in UK. These gave me snapshots of their business models. I knew that I wanted to work on large scale projects; this led to my preference for Multiplex. I was also attracted by the fact that there are opportunities to work internationally.

My application

I applied directly to the HR department of the company for a graduate position but not for any specific post. There were three phases of interviewing – the first was a telephone interview, second was a pre-interview questionnaire involving 24 questions about my personality, IQ and decision-making skills, and finally the interview.

Current projects

I am currently working on the Greater Peterborough Health Investment Plan, which is a hospital project worth over £300 million. My role includes design related activities like scanning the drawings of the areas I am working on for problems and getting them corrected, attending design workshop meetings with all the consultants, document controlling and ground investigations, and meeting end users and consultants. At the moment I’m based full time in the site office, as we are at the preferred bidder stage with construction due to start early next year.

The best thing about the project I’m working on now is that, as it’s a new development, I’ll get to see the whole process: an ideal experience for a graduate. I now know some of the features that make up a good project and I love getting involved in different fields of work. Although I’m away from my friends at the moment the atmosphere in the office is so enjoyable that I’m finding working life just as good as student life!
