My father ran a development company so I have always been interested in construction. I decided that university was for me and first heard of my employer there.

I submitted a CV and covering letter and attended two interviews for my year-long placement. They were pleased with my progress and I was later offered a permanent graduate position.

Managing time and people

Managing people is a central part of my role and I work with labourers, subcontractors and sales staff.

It’s my job to oversee the building of a site alongside the site manager, and ensure that snagging (a check for fine details and usability) is complete prior to the handover of a new home. I also organise work schedules for each trade group and make sure that materials get delivered on time.

Looking to the future

I am a qualified first aider and recently put my skills to good use when a delivery driver had an epileptic fit on site. I take great satisfaction in building high quality houses and handing them over to customers.

In the future I would like to progress to contract management and I’m currently working towards chartership with the CIOB.
