NAME Ian White
JOB Building services engineer
EMPLOYER Mace Group
AREA OF WORK Building services engineering
QUALIFICATIONS BEng building services engineering, Northumbria University (2006); MSc sustainable energy systems, London Southbank University
I chose to work in building services engineering because no other discipline within construction offers the same scope. It covers every system that makes a building both safe and comfortable to be in, from heating to water and electricity, so you can work in a wide variety of areas.
I applied for this position after my lecturer recommended the company to me and the application process involved an interview followed by an assessment day. The interview focused on what I could gain from the job and the second stage assessment day was very challenging. We had to put together a group presentation on the day, working with people we'd only just met and incorporating lots of ideas.
I design mechanical building services for Hertfordshire County Council buildings. This includes working on schools, libraries and fire stations. As a consultant, I advise on sustainable energy systems; establish CO2 emission targets in line with building regulations; and solve any design issues that occur on site. I often have to quickly re-think elements of the design – problem solving is the key skill in my job. It’s great to see designs through from the drawing board to reality and I work closely with architects, construction managers and contractors to make this happen.
My postgraduate studies and my employer's management training programme have enabled me to achieve membership status with the CIOB and CIBSE and become a CIBSE-accredited low-carbon consultant energy assessor. When my MSc is completed, I intend to become chartered with both institutes. My biggest highlight to date was being shortlisted for the Construction’s Future Leaders award.
