JOB Site manager (construction and completion)
EMPLOYER Aker Kvaerner Engineering Services
DEGREE BEng mechanical engineering (1989)
UNIVERSITY University of Manchester (UMIST)

My role as site manager involves developing project implementation programmes and details of the sequence of construction. I then discuss and reach agreement with the client regarding construction strategies. These include logistical issues (such as procurement strategy, primary or secondary plant and equipment delivery, or co-ordination with any ongoing site operations), security, project working agreements, subcontract strategies and health, safety and environmental plans.

Previous roles

I started with my current employer as a graduate engineer then progressed to fluids engineer, construction engineer and finally construction site manager. My transfer to the construction and completions department was logical as I had enjoyed working on sites and wanted to be involved in projects from the beginning through to completion. Site work involves greater responsibility and requires careful assessment and consideration to ensure the completion date is maintained.

Most exciting project

Working on the Tai Po water treatment project – one of the largest water treatment projects in Hong Kong. Living and working in Hong Kong provided a fantastic opportunity to learn about the culture. It also allowed me to understand how to do business with and improve the performance of Hong Kong contractors.

The highs

Being my own boss. As site manager I have full control of all works on site during the construction phase, which is a demanding role but one that I enjoy.

The lows

Working away from my home and family can be difficult at times but I’m lucky that I get to travel and see new places in my job.
