It was only after completing work experience within professional services here in Guernsey that I realised that gaining my ACA qualification could open many doors for me – I had no planned career path when I decided to read economics at university. The work placement gave me a valuable insight into the accounting and audit profession.

Life on the beach

I moved to Guernsey when I was seven years old. Enjoying long summer evenings, days on the beach and cliff walks all made Guernsey a great environment to grow up in and one I still value highly now. Living and working in Guernsey is a very different experience from that of working in a UK office. The commute to work is short and when you want to escape the hustle and bustle of town, you’ve instant access to the quieter life and the chance to enjoy those long summer evenings on the beach!

Getting my career on track

We work in different audit teams depending upon the clients, which are mainly in the financial services industry, and visit client offices on a week to week basis. Being part of a smaller office allows increased responsibility at a more junior level and access to opportunities that enables me to gain valuable experience to further my career.

My firm has been very supportive of my work/life balance. I have always been heavily involved with athletics and one of the reasons I chose to come back to Guernsey was so that I could continue this passion at the same time as beginning my career. The Channel Islands is an excellent place to maintain this work/life balance: I’ve had to be prepared to work and study hard for the first few years while I’m qualifying but there are also plenty of social events organised at work, at which I can let my hair down in style.
