JOB Student accountant
EMPLOYER PKF (Guernsey) Limited
DEGREE Bournemouth University, BA business studies (2006)
In the last year of my degree, I took a module in accountancy. I didn’t expect it to be very interesting but I ended up enjoying it and discovered that I was good at it, so I looked for a job in that area.
I was born and grew up in Guernsey, and it made sense to come back after university because my friends were returning at the same time. It also made financial sense, as I could move back in with my parents while
I looked for a job. I expect to stay here for several years after I finish my ACCA training – I might go travelling at some point, but I’ll probably come back afterwards. The summers are the best thing about Guernsey – there aren’t many places where you can finish work and be on the beach in ten minutes. If you’re considering working in the Channel Islands, think how you’d feel about moving to a small island. There are lots of opportunities but if you enjoy working in a big city then it won’t be right for you.
I work in the audit department of an accountancy firm, where I help qualified auditors with a wide range of clients and get a feel for what I’m supposed to be doing. I’m starting to do my own small audits, which are then reviewed, and the team is very supportive. There’s a lot of number checking but there’s more interesting work too. I enjoy being out of the office, meeting new people and learning about different types of businesses. I’ve spent more and more time visiting clients as I’ve progressed.
I’m working for my ACCA qualification so I have to spend a lot of time studying. I’m expecting the workload to be lighter in the summer so I’ll have time to go to the beach!
