Jenny Hague is a claims graduate trainee at Xchanging Claims Services. She has a BA management studies from the University of Leicester.

Why did you choose a graduate career in insurance?

I completed a two-month placement with Chubb Insurance Company of Europe during the summer of my second year at university, which introduced me not only to the insurance sector as a whole, but also to the London and Lloyd’s markets. The diverse and dynamic nature of the industry really appealed to me.

Why do you think you were hired?

I think accuracy and attention to detail in my initial application, together with a genuine desire to work for the company, impressed at interview.

What does your graduate job in insurance claims involve?

My employer provides claims processing and adjusting services to syndicates (companies) who underwrite insurance within Lloyd’s and the London market. I work as part of a team of aviation loss adjusters. I handle aviation claims that arise in the Lloyd’s market, take decisions about the validity of claims and advise companies about the status of claims on policies they underwrite. I come across so many different kinds of losses that I literally do learn something new every day. A particular highlight was when I attended a survey of a crashed aircraft – it was the first one I attended and a great learning experience.

’The insurance industry has a reputation for being lacklustre, but in my experience this is by no means the case! I’ve been lucky enough to work on some exciting high-profile claims that have seen media coverage.’

What is your work/life balance like?

My day starts at 9.00 am and ends at 5.30 pm. Putting in longer hours is sometimes necessary in the event of a big loss or catastrophe but, on the whole, my workload is manageable and I rarely have to compromise my social life.

I’m currently working towards my ACII (Advanced diploma for the Chartered Insurance Institute). This is a challenge at times, but having a relevant qualification under my belt is sure to pay off.

Why should graduates consider getting jobs in insurance?

The insurance industry has a reputation for being lacklustre, but in my experience this is by no means the case! I’ve been lucky enough to work on some high-profile claims that have seen media coverage, which was very exciting.

I’d advise graduates to do their research and look into the variety of insurance roles out there – there are far more than you think!
