Teresa Sayers, chief executive, Financial Services Skills Council

'You don’t need to be a finance or business studies graduate to succeed in financial services.'

Why did you choose financial services?

As with many people, financial services chose me, rather than the other way round!

I did the UK’s first degree in plant biotechnology, and subsequently found that the research and analytical skills I developed could be applied to a wide range of business situations. I was researching careers in financial services for the Chartered Insurance Institute, when I realised that the sector was full of opportunities.

What advice can you offer graduates?

The way I entered the industry is a good demonstration that you don’t need to be a finance or business studies graduate to succeed. There is a huge range of diverse opportunities out there.
