Kate Davies

Chief technician, neurophysiology

Employer: Luton and Dunstable Hospital
Qualifications: BSc physiological measurement (neurophysiology), University of Middlesex

I joined the NHS because I was keen to work with my local community. My first role was as a clinical physiologist, using scientific and technical skills to perform basic tests on patients, gathering information about their condition, and writing technical reports for the consultant neurophysiologist. I learned a lot during this time, including how to use specialist equipment, which provided me with a good knowledge-base that I have built on in further positions.

Moving on

I then decided that I wanted to combine my interest in clinical science with the opportunity to develop my technical and clinical skills. With this in mind I applied to become a specialist clinical physiologist, learning how to complete a series of more specialised tests and taking on additional departmental responsibilities such as the training and supervision of students, the completion of departmental audits and an involvement with research and development activities.

I am now a highly specialised clinical physiologist and carry out a range of specialist and advanced tests as well as performing administrative and managerial duties. I have an active involvement with the training of students, including supervising their work-based assessments, and I also deputise for the department manager.

Getting involved

My work involves close contact with a wide range of people, which really suits me as I enjoy the interaction and the challenges this brings. It can be difficult at times working in a hospital as I am exposed to distressing situations such as a patient’s illness or social history. However, there is always support available from colleagues.

My plans in the future are to continue on my present career path, gaining further clinical and managerial experience as well as studying for a further qualification such as an MSc. I would eventually like to run my own department. I have learned as my career has progressed that accurate communication is really important. You need to be able to communicate your ideas effectively.
