Graduates talk work experience: a placement in a corporate venue team

Brad Hollick used his work experience placement to make contacts and network his way to a graduate job. He found venues for corporate events and got to stay in fantastic hotels for free!
I’ve learned a lot about the tourism sector, and also about my own strengths – Brad Hollick

'I had always intended to do work experience and my university actively encourages students to take a year out to put theory into practice. I found my work placement through the placement office at university, which also gave advice on applying. The sales environment suits my previous work experience and the position offers a lot of customer contact, which I really enjoy.'

Doing varied work

'There are two sides to the business: the venue team offers corporate venue finding and HotelStayUK is the leisure side of the business, making hotel reservations for members of the public. I’ve worked primarily with the venue team. I liaise with key account and hotel contacts, check contracts and am responsible for a variety of tasks from marketing literature to accounting, even undertaking tasks in finance or personnel and making hotel reservations.'

Recognising my strengths

'I’ve been exposed to many sides of the business as it’s a relatively young, fast-growing company – new things happen on a daily basis and I’ve been able to get hands-on experience, often working with senior people. I’ve learned a lot about the tourism sector, and also about my own strengths. For instance, I’m good at sales but business development is also a strength I’ve now recognised.'

Making industry contacts

'One of the best things about the work placement is that I’ve had the opportunity to stay in some fantastic hotels and I haven’t had to pay a penny. But at the same time, it’s also been a great opportunity to network with people in the industry – I’ve already made initial contacts for potential employment in the future.'

Brad Hollick has a degree in tourism management from the University of Hertfordshire and completed a 12-month placement with HotelStayUK.
