Graduates talk work experience: a placement as an events assistant

Chloe Stafford’s 15-month work experience placement led to a graduate job in events. She helped to run everything from product launches to a wake, and used the time to plan for her graduate career.

'I applied to many companies but had the most success from using a university website where employers can advertise placements. I sent in my CV, was invited to interview and then spent a day working at an event, after which I was offered the 15-month placement.'

Life in the fast lane

I assisted with everything from sourcing items for events to packing up the equipment – Chloe Stafford

'As an events assistant I worked closely with the operations manager and party planners. We worked on two to three events each day, including product launches, private dinners, corporate events, parties and weddings – even a wake. I assisted with everything from sourcing items for events to packing up the equipment. I also spent a week working in every department in the company to gain a sense of what they did. I worked in accounts, the kitchens, transport and logistics and in the warehouse.'

'As the company was partowned by McLaren, I even spent a week helping with catering and hospitality for Formula One, and travelled to help at races in Spain, Monaco and Italy! I had an amazing time on my work placement. I put my skills into practice, learned organisational skills and how to communicate with different people from suppliers to directors. I was given a lot of responsibility and treated as a valued member of the team. The placement also gave me a good focus on what career I want – I have started a job in events since graduating.'

Chloé Stafford (23) did a placement at Absolute Taste. She has a degree in leisure marketing from Bournemouth University.
