The first thing I do in the morning is check my e-mails and calendar to see if I have any specific tasks to do that day. I’m studying for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) Certificate in Personnel Practice so I spend one afternoon a week at college. If I’ve been out the day before I’ll need to spend some time catching up on everything that happened while I was out.
The local authority for which I work is responsible for education in the area and it’s my job to produce contracts of employment for school staff. I also answer questions about contracts, keep records on the HR system up to date and make sure the local authority’s payroll department receives information about new starters and people who have left so that they know who to pay each month.
I send out the contracts I’ve prepared to the relevant people. There is a legal aspect to working in HR – we have to make sure that all procedures have been followed correctly before a contract can be issued – so if school administrators haven’t sent the right information through I will need to contact them to find out where it is and when they will send it.
Once a month we have a meeting to find out what everyone in the team is working on. It’s helpful to be able to share tips and good practice: in fact, one of the things I enjoy most about my job is that I have learned so much – not only from my course but also from my colleagues.
I finish at 5.15, but I deal with lots of files and papers so I’ll need to tidy my desk before I leave so that I know where to start the next day.
