David Mort: Infosys graduate

Mechanical engineering graduate David's job as software engineer involves providing software services to clients.

Employer: Infosys Technology Limited
University: University of Nottingham
Subject: BEng mechanical engineering

I took a number of software modules during my degree and I also worked on a small software project during my engineering placement at a manufacturing site. Through this experience I realised how central IT is in everything we do, and I knew that a technology career would offer me variety and a range of opportunities. The trickiest part of applying for jobs was showing that I could transfer my technical abilities from mechanical engineering to software development. I already had software experience, but my employer was prepared to take on technically oriented graduates and to provide the training I needed.

My job

Infosys provides software services to clients from a wide range of business sectors including finance, retail and manufacturing. I’m currently working for a financial client, enhancing an existing application to improve its performance.

I trained in a wide range of technologies when I started, which I use in my day-to-day work. A key skill I’ve developed is the ability to integrate quickly within the client’s team – it helps that I’m comfortable asking questions to get the information I need to do my work. It’s also important to be sociable and network. I like to get to know people and find out how things are done.

My work environment

This is my first assignment and I’m working full time for a development team within an investment bank. I could be sent anywhere in the world for my next project – this prospect feels exciting and was an attraction of the job.

My first year in IT

My first six months were spent in India, training. Not only did I get a good grounding in the fundamentals of computer science, programming languages, cultural awareness and business skills, but I also had the chance to travel in India and get immersed in the culture. Another first-year highlight was receiving great client reviews for my first projects. This was particularly satisfying as I was working in programming languages I hadn’t used before – it showed me that I was capable.
