Working as a barrister outside London

I was brought up near Brighton, though I never expected to end up here. I imagined I’d be based in London or the south east. I think there’s much less of a commute here than would usually be the case in London: I can walk to chambers along the seafront in half an hour, which makes it much easier to work at evenings and weekends. In my opinion you get a better quality of work early on outside London and it’s easier to maintain your work/life balance, which helps to avoid burnout. Out of work, I play netball and am interested in the arts and theatre.

Life in a Brighton set

I am a family law practitioner and spend most days in court, often preparing for the next day in the evening. I have a very full caseload. Some of my cases have a quick turnover, though others take a number of months or even years. I deal with residence and contact disputes and cases where the local authority is involved in taking children into care. I usually act for the parents and am instructed by their solicitors, though sometimes I represent the local authority. This area of work can be very satisfying, particularly when an outcome can be achieved which is favorable to your client and, of course, in the best interests of the child. It’s hard work, but I find it far less stressful than if I was working in London. I would strongly recommend looking for work experience both in London and outside it, so it’s possible to compare before making a final decision.

What’s great about Brighton

Brighton is very relaxed and has a wonderful atmosphere. Walking along the seafront during the summer months is like being on holiday. There are some barristers who live here and commute to London!
