Lucy Stone QC, barrister, Queen Elizabeth Building

Lucy found life at the Bar fascinating and that it had an extraordinary level of community.

Embarrassingly, I decided to become a barrister after watching too many fictional TV series about the Bar. I knew nobody in the profession and had no relevant experience, but felt not in the least deterred. I found willingness everywhere to assist me; there is an extraordinary level of community at the Bar. Life at the Bar was just as I had imagined – constantly fascinating. I had underestimated the hours – I had not known how little sleep I would have to survive on, or the extent to which the job is capable of interfering in family life, but it is a rare privilege to have a job that one enjoys almost all the time. If you are determined to do it, go ahead; but if you are not sure, don’t – it is too great a commitment.
