I wanted to work in criminal law and liked the work ethic that came across from the PDSO’s website. It is a public sector body that helps vulnerable people to get access to justice.

I mostly work on cases by myself, dealing with everything from road traffic offences to High Court and Sherrif Court cases, though I am well supported. I’ve recently finished a High Court trial where I did everything except the advocacy, and I’ve been working on an appeal based on a murder trial. I’m also on my feet every day in Justice of the Peace Courts and Sherrif Courts.

I’m on call once a month for about a week, so I have police officers phoning me in the middle of the night! However, the work/life balance is good: I normally work 8.30 am to 5.00 pm. I definitely recommend criminal defence work – it’s exciting, I meet a huge range of people and I have some great stories to tell.
