Carron Rand

trainee solicitor: dispute management

FIRM Biggart Baillie LLP (Glasgow and Edinburgh offices)
CURRENT SEAT Dispute management
UNIVERSITY Aberdeen, law (2005)

I started my traineeship in the Glasgow office, doing seats in commercial property and pensions. I’m now in the the public administration law team within the dispute management department in Edinburgh and I’ll be staying here once I qualify. In my first seat I dealt with lots of commercial leases and the sale of commercial land and buildings, for example researching land ownership, checking lease documents and registering sales with the Land Register of Scotland. My seat in pensions was more technical: one key task was researching new legislation that could impact on pensions. In my current team I deal with local authority work and other areas including debt recovery, employment law and child law. I’ve participated in a good deal of court work, both getting on my feet in the Sherrif Court and assisting with Court of Session cases – for example instructing advocates and taking notes in court.
