Undertaking my LLB conversion course

Lesley Ann Brown, a Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives, shares her experience of taking a one-year LLB conversion course as a mature student.

I had worked as a fee-earner and accredited police station representative for 13 years before deciding to take the drastic step of giving up my job and converting to law. I chose to study a one-year course at Staffordshire University as it’s close to home and was the quickest option open to me, considering my family commitments. The LLB conversion was the icing on the cake.

Steep learning curve

Classes were spread across four days each week, comprising a mix of lectures and tutorials. The course was intensive from day one – calling for high organisation and commitment to achieve a good result – but, because I came straight from a full-time job, I was used to hard work. It also helped that I’m an avid reader: the volume of reading was phenomenal and I often spent evenings and weekends preparing for sessions.

As a mature student who’d never written an essay-style question in her life, it was a steep learning curve, but the supportive lecturers, purpose-built court room and huge law library were definite advantages.

A culture shock

I continued working for a local firm of solicitors in the holidays, so returning to the classroom each term was a culture shock. The world of criminal defence is very harsh – support isn’t often forthcoming and clients occasionally get violent. I found the university environment reassuringly different – there was always someone on hand to help.

I was proud to be awarded a distinction and the law school prize for the best overall performance on my LPC. Having recently passed the professional skills course, I’m soon to be admitted as a solicitor – as a FILEX, I’m exempt from the training contract requirements. I’d recommend an LLB to any professional who wishes to quickly convert existing qualifications.

Lesley gained entry to the GDL as a Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives (FILEX). In 2009 she graduated from STAFFORDSHIRE UNIVERSITY LAW SCHOOL with a GDL and LLB (CPE). Having completed the legal practice course in 2010 at the same institution, she has since applied for admission to the roll of solicitors and is now seeking employment.
