My work experience in construction law

Trainee solicitor Caroline Lister explains how an open day led to a vacation placement with a law firm and describes the social opportunities on offer.

I attended an open day and this led to the placement. The open day was an excellent way to get a sneak preview of the firm and was also a good opportunity to meet with partners and trainees. I also did placements with a high-street firm and one in the West End. It was helpful to have different types of work experience as this helped me decide on the type and size of firm that I wanted to train with.

On placement

I was slightly apprehensive as I was unsure of the type and level of work I’d be involved with. I spent three days in the construction department and two days in employment, sitting with trainees. I attended two client meetings, reviewed building contracts, went to an employment tribunal and helped on research assignments. The trainees were all very friendly and didn’t mind answering my questions. I was introduced to the partners in both groups and several took the time to come to talk with me and tell me about the type of work they do. The social side of the placement was excellent. We had a couple of evening drinks organised by the trainees and I took part in a softball match against another firm.

Life as a trainee

I have been given a high level of responsibility, been supervised throughout and had excellent client contact. I’ve made the effort to get involved in all aspects of the firm, including co-chairing the Charities Committee.
