Prisilia Mbuy is a senior consultant at Informed Solutions. She received an MSc in information technology from Kingston University.
With a background in mathematics and information technology, I thought a career in IT was a natural choice for me. However, after a number of general IT positions I craved a career where I would be able to influence outcomes and develop and manage systems which would lead to real business benefits for organisations.
I joined Informed Solutions in 2006 and feel my decision to move into consulting has been firmly justified. My role involves working with clients to deliver operational and business benefits through the effective and efficient management of people, processes and systems. I enjoy the multi-faceted nature of my role in a technical as well as a commercially demanding environment. I am constantly being pushed and challenged which, although daunting, is made possible through the support and skills provided by my colleagues. I have great satisfaction in reflecting on what I have achieved and learnt, and the amount of personal and professional development I have garnered from a career in consulting.
Consulting requires hard work, commitment and a genuine passion and desire to succeed
Consulting requires hard work, commitment and a genuine passion and desire to succeed. Strong interpersonal skills are a must as you need to be able to facilitate consultations with your clients and influence the outcomes. Do your research on the culture, values and development opportunities within a consulting firm. The recruitment process is a two-way process – for the organisation to decide if you are fit for the role and for you to learn about its culture, development opportunities and your prospective colleagues.
Tailor your CV for the role and the company to which you are applying. Whilst your CV should reflect your academic achievements, you will also need to show you are someone who has a broad outlook and enjoyment of life and with whom they would enjoy working in a team. Prepare for interviews with relevant examples of times you have worked in teams, within pressured environments, and be ready to show how you’ve overcome challenges and obstacles.
