Charlotte Bull

National management trainee

Employer: Telford and Wrekin Council

Qualifications: BA history, University of York

8.30 am

I arrive at work after battling for a car park space and grab a coffee while I go through my e-mails and check my calendar for any meetings. My main tasks tend to centre on project management so phone calls and e-mails are essential to ensure different elements of a project get off the ground and run smoothly.

11.00 am

Around mid-morning I’ll catch up with my line manager in order to share any problems and offer progress reports on whatever I am working on at that time. I am on the national graduate development programme so I get to experience working in a wide range of local government services at Telford and Wrekin Council. I have had some amazing experiences since I started, ranging from directing a film crew to collecting dumped rubbish bags to shadowing the chief executive.

1.00 pm

By early afternoon I am looking forward to lunch, which is either a sandwich at my desk or, if meetings and work allow, coffee and cake with friends in Telford centre. The social side of work is always busy. Moving between different departments and teams means that there is often a birthday to celebrate or a leaving do.

2.00 pm

In the afternoon I’ll attend a variety of meetings – I might run an employee focus group or deliver a report at a management team meeting. I’ll also take my turn doing the tea run to ensure that everyone in the office is well supplied with tea and coffee!

5.30 pm

By the end of the day I’ll have sent my last e-mail, and I tidy up my desk ready for the next day. I’m lucky that the range of projects I am involved in is not only diverse but also challenging and I get so much satisfaction in knowing that my work will make a real impact on the people and communities in the borough.
