Vicki Dawson

Duty manager

Employer: The De Vere Grand

Area of work: Hotels

Qualifications: Travel and tourism degree, City College, Brighton and Hove

I was originally planning on going straight to university after my HND. However, I was working part time as a waitress at the De Vere Grand Hotel in Brighton and saw an event management job advertised there. My application for this wasn’t successful but I was offered a duty manager role. I’m on a two-year programme on which I get to experience different functions; at the moment I spend most days working in event management and do one or two shifts a week as a duty manager.

My job

On my duty-manager shifts I’m responsible for ensuring all the departments are fully staffed and running smoothly, dealing with complaints and keeping an eye on health and safety issues. I also do spot-checks on rooms to ensure they’re up to standard. I work five days a week on a rota system: duty manager shifts are from 7.00 am till 5.00 or 6.00 pm (early shift) or 2.00 pm to 10.00 or 11.00 pm (late shift); events shifts start and finish later.

Best and worst

I love knowing the customers are walking away thinking that they’ve had such a good time that they’ll definitely come back; however, the long hours can be tiring.
