Sam Onanda

TARGETjobs campus representative

University: University of St Andrews
Subject: BSc chemistry

My role involves marketing the TARGETjobs brand on campus. I advertise the campaigns and promote the brand via a variety of methods including a Facebook group, which I created and is recommended by the campus co-ordinators as a template for online registrations.

We’re given suggestions of what type of approach to take in recruiting people but I’ve found that it’s important to use my initiative. For example, in my chemistry department the students are so in demand that many of them will already have offers of jobs ready for them when they graduate. The students who attend the careers centre have a much broader interest and are more open to the idea of using the TARGETchances events and the TARGETjobs website.

I originally got involved in the scheme after looking in the careers service for any jobs that might provide good experience for the future. I’d already completed internships involving product and brand management but none of my previous roles were as varied as my position as campus representative. It’s also a good feeling to help people find jobs and work experience: I can see first-hand how the services on offer make a difference to the people I recruit.

I want to work in brand management when I graduate so the experience I have gained from devising marketing approaches, plus the credibility that comes from being associated with a reputable brand has been awesome.
