How much does patent work pay?

Salary ranges for patent attorneys and patent examiners.

Patent work is paid as well as other qualified professions. Starting salaries as a patent agent (or attorney) tend to be between £16,000 and £25,000 and there may be opportunities for bonuses. When you become chartered you’ll receive a substantial payrise. In a senior position, after 10 to 15 years in the role, you could be earning as much as £120,000. It’s generally accepted that starting salaries are better in corporate practice, but that you’re likely to reap long-term rewards in private practice.

Salaries for patent examiners tend to keep pace with promotions. Graduates starting out at the UK Intellectual Property Office (formerly the Patent Office) will earn more than £20,000 and senior examiners around £50,000.As you progress from  this position, salaries match the Civil Service's pay scheme.
