After a fairly straightforward commute, I’m usually in the office by 9.00 am looking through my e-mails and identifying any immediate or pressing tasks.
As I often attend client meetings late in the afternoon, I usually write up my notes first thing in the morning. I then continue making arrangements for my next meeting later on in the day.
The audit process is a continual dialogue between the client and myself and involves a combination of checking paperwork, speaking to the relevant people, identifying potential queries and then following these up. Depending on the type of audit, there are a number of tasks that I need to complete, so before my meeting I need to find out what the requirements of the audit are and identify who the right people are to talk to. I then organise the tasks so that I can speak to the various people in a logical order.
I have lunch and then head over to the client’s offices to attend the meeting. This usually starts with an introduction to what I will be looking for so they know what to expect. Some meetings take longer than others but they usually last between two to three hours.
When I get back to the office I start consolidating what I learned at the meeting and make a note of any queries that I have to follow up. It’s the variety of my work that keeps it interesting. So far, I have only had to complete the same type of audit twice and even then the outcome was completely different.
Finally, as each trainee is ‘buddied’ up with a new recruit, I make time to check how my 'buddy' is getting on. I’ll be out of the office tomorrow at college, completing practical exercises relating to accountancy and preparing for the next round of examinations, which happen every six months.
