NAME: Emma Anderson
JOB: Graduate building surveyor
EMPLOYER: CB Richard Ellis
QUALIFICATIONS: BA history, Trinity College Dublin (2003); MSc building surveying, London South Bank University (2008)
After finishing my undergraduate degree I did a couple of months’ work experience with a small building surveying practice in Edinburgh, which initially got me interested in surveying. When I returned from two years’ travelling, I decided I wanted a practical, hands-on career that would enable me to move around – so I chose to do a conversion course in building surveying.
The course was intensive and I had to juggle three days of lectures and study groups each week, alongside a part-time job and writing job applications. Applying in the first few months of the course meant that I had very little technical knowledge but my employer recognised this and asked more about my soft skills during the interview. I was able to continue working on my dissertation once I began my job, which wasn’t easy but meant I could use my connections within the company to help with my work.
I am now working towards my APC while assisting with surveys for a wide range of buildings, from disused factories to a number of hotels in Paris. I have to record my work experience in a diary to show that I have achieved the necessary technical competences, as well as attend lectures in my spare time and regular meetings with my supervisor.
When looking for your first job, it’s important to find an employer that will support you throughout the APC and has a proven track record of getting its graduates through the qualification. Speaking to graduate employees will help to give you a realistic view of the organisation.
