Jennii Chadwick

intermediate quantity surveyor - qualifying with ICES

NAME Jennii Chadwick GMInstCS
EMPLOYER: BAM Nuttall
UNIVERSITY: Nottingham Trent University
SUBJECT BSc civil engineering and commercial management

Training with ICES

Since graduating, I have been working as a contractor’s quantity surveyor in the civil engineering industry. I have been involved in a number of projects, including road, rail and new build. I was quickly promoted to intermediate from graduate quantity surveyor, a role which involves more responsibility for my own schemes. At university, as a student member of ICES I was actively involved in the graduate and student group. From this involvement I knew what professional accreditation would involve before starting work, and when I graduated I became a graduate member (GMInstCS).

To achieve corporate membership of the ICES, I record all my activities, experience and competences gained in a site diary. With the accompanying relevant experience I can go forward to the corporate review interview. As well as a site diary, I have also written a number of reports and papers.

Good prospects

The training provides me with a thorough understanding of all aspects of the role. I have a delegated QS mentor who ensures my training needs are on track and makes sure that I have access to the experience I need. Ultimately the qualification will be evidence that I’m competent in my job and it’s proof that I have the desire to work and move on professionally in my career. Professional development through an institution is a way of standing out from the crowd and in a competitive industry it’s imperative!
