quantity surveyor taking the APC

JOB TITLE Assistant surveyor
EMPLOYER Wates
DEGREE BA history, Newcastle University; MSc quantity surveying, London South Bank University

Since joining my employer as a trainee two years ago I’ve been promoted to assistant surveyor, completed a part-time masters course, and started working towards my APC. Juggling study and a job at the same time was hard work, but it helped to broaden my knowledge of the industry. And when it comes to the APC, everything you do is relevant. It all goes into the diary. When I began, I was advised to set aside a time every week to write up my diary, and I try to do this regardless of pressure of work. I also have regular meetings with my supervisor and counsellor to review my progress and to look at the areas I need to focus on in the coming months.

'When it comes to the APC, everything you do is relevant.'

My employer has a good training structure with a big handbook and four APC courses a year. The thought of the interview at the end is daunting but I know I will be well prepared. Following this structured training process means that when working for clients I can be confident that I am following best practice. Having that professional qualification also means that clients have confidence in you.

Choose an employer that will invest in you

When you’re choosing an employer you need to find an organisation that is going to invest in you through a good training programme and that has the resources to provide the support you will need. It’s important to have a good relationship with your APC supervisor and counsellor, keeping close links with them both. And keep up to date with your diary!
