Gerard Cook, partner, Davis Langdon (quantity surveyor)

'Being involved in an iconic design'

My most memorable project is…

The Albion Riverside development designed by Foster and Partners. I was involved with this 500,000 ft2 apartment building for over six years from inception through to completion. The iconic design pushed the boundaries of 3D modelling at the time and I think it’s a stunning addition to the landscape of the River Thames.

My greatest achievement is…

Becoming a partner in a top quantity surveying practice at 31. Or on a personal level I would say designing and building a house for my family.

When I first started out in the industry I wish I’d known…

More about what a quantity surveyor actually did! While I was unsure of how the role fitted into the wider construction industry, I was drawn to the idea of being involved with producing a physical output – a building.

Surveyors must be…

In possession of a number of skills and qualities including intellect, initiative, drive, integrity, and good communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.

I’d like candidates to take more notice of…

Their preparation. It’s essential to do your homework before an interview – think about your motivation and the bigger picture. You need to be able to explain how your skills can impact upon the role and the organisation that is assessing you.
