IT: Paul Bevis

Analyst programmer, House of Fraser

Name: Paul Bevis

Job: Analyst programmer

Employer: House of Fraser

Area of work: Information technology (IT)

Qualifications: computing, Bournemouth University

I chose a degree that included an industrial placement year and applied to House of Fraser’s IT centre in Swindon. After completing this year, I was offered sponsorship through my final year and a permanent position on graduation.

My job

I work for the development services department, which is an internal resource pool of developers who are assigned to various projects and teams within IT development. My current assignment is for the marketing and management information team who are working on the systems development of the House of Fraser Recognition Loyalty scheme, which is a customer reward scheme. I work on the whole of the development life cycle from user requirements, through design, coding and testing to live support. For this reason, there is no such thing as a typical day as my job involves so many different tasks. I tend to be office based and work 9.00 am to 5.00 pm but this can be varied if it needs to be.

Best and worst

I work on a variety of projects using the latest technology. My work can be quite challenging as I often have very detailed technical issues to address. However, I always get a great sense of achievement when I’ve solved them.
