From retail placement to graduate scheme: work experience in commercial management

After a successful application to the Marks & Spencer business placement programme, Emma Cassidy took on plenty of commercial responsibility – and was cherry-picked as management material.

Name: Emma Cassidy
Qualifications: BSc textile design with design management and industrial experience, University of Manchester
Work experience placement: Marks & Spencer business placement programme

How did you first hear about this opportunity?

I first became aware of the business placement programme following the GMEX careers fair in Manchester. The application process involved an application form, online tests and an assessment centre, but it was well worth it in the end!

Taking charge

The structured training programme involved spending time in every department, including general merchandise, foods, store operations and human resources. I was also part of the Manchester late night opening project where a team of us persuaded 114 retailers in the city centre to trade late every night. My main responsibilities as a trainee commercial manager included driving sales and growing profit, initiating change, developing talented people and ensuring that we had contented customers.

Trying retail on for size

The level of commitment required to be successful on the scheme soon helps you to decide if retail management is really your dream career. Following my placement I knew that retail was definitely my calling. I have since been successful in joining the management graduate buying scheme. I’d advise anyone thinking of doing a similar placement to go for it – it will definitely provide you with an in-depth and honest insight into the retail world and hopefully leave you inspired and passionate about the industry.
