Help! I'm on hold

Have you got the job or not? In tough economic conditions graduate recruiters may not be able to confirm an offer immediately. Here's what to do if you're put on hold.

This year you may encounter the scenario of being ‘put on hold’. This is positive, kind of. In normal economic conditions, you would have got an offer; if you had been unsuitable you would have been told straightaway. The recession is affecting recruitment decisions (at all levels – not just graduate). Understandably it is hard for businesses to confirm final numbers of positions when the economy is dealing most markets a very difficult hand.

What to do when your put on hold

There are two things to do if you are put into the 'on hold' predicament:

  • Keep in touch with the recruiter to let them know you are still interested while you wait to hear.
  • Keep applying for other jobs and attending interviews. It is dangerous to make assumptions that you will be the lucky one and get the job – you may miss the cut.

Small consolation: you are still a desirable candidate in the grand scheme of things and it’s really not personal. Recruiters hate turning away candidates that they would have snapped up in more buoyant times.
