Competences and qualifications

Applicants to nutrition and finance should have or be predicted a 2.1, whilst a 2.2 appears to be acceptable for the commercial and supply chain schemes.

For the commercial, finance and supply chain schemes there are no restrictions on what degree discipline applicants have studied. However, anyone applying to the nutrition scheme should have a degree related to animal nutrition. Ideally, these candidates should also have A levels in chemistry and biology.

Finance candidates also need at least ABB at A level, preferably including maths; if they haven't studied maths at this level, they should have achieved A or A* at GCSE.

Application tips

The graduate recruitment process at AB Agri involves submission of an online form, following which successful candidates are then invited to take part in an interview. This can take place either face-to-face or over the phone. The final stage is to attend an assessment day.

The basics

The initial sections of the fairly short online application form ask for background personal details and educational background. Candidates should specify their degree, but do not need to go into detail about the modules they have taken.

Motivational and competency questions

The parts of the form that require more thought involve composing extended answers to various motivational and competency questions:

1. What attracted you to AB Agri's graduate scheme?
2. Why does the graduate scheme [in the business area you have chosen] appeal to you specifically?
3. What types of team/social activities are you regularly involved in? What have you specifically contributed? How will you utilise what you have learnt in team/social activities on our graduate programme?
4. Tell us about a great team you were part of. How would others in that team describe you? What role did you play?
5. Describe a time when you have undertaken a leadership role. What was the situation? How did you become the leader? What exactly did you do/say? How did this benefit the situation?
6. Tell us about a time that you had to adapt to a difficult situation. What made the situation difficult? What did you personally do to deal with the situation? What was the outcome?
7. Give an example of an important goal that you set in the past. Tell about your success in reaching it. What was the goal? How did you go about achieving it? How did you measure your success?
8. What, in your opinion, are the key ingredients in guiding and maintaining successful business relationships? Give examples of how you have developed successful professional relationships.
9. Give an example of how you worked effectively with a variety of people to accomplish an important result. What was the result you were aiming for? What role did you specifically play? What did you specifically contribute?

The first two questions must be answered within a maximum of 2,000 characters (including spaces), and the rest within 3,000 characters.
