The overview

Babcock International Group plc is a UK-based engineering support services company. It aims to deliver all stages of an engineering contract, including planning, design, construction and maintenance. Its revenues for the financial year ending in 2010 were almost £1.9 billion and it employs over 27,000 people worldwide.

The company started off in the US, constructing boilers used in steam ships and power stations, then expanded into the UK. It has diversified into different engineering projects. Clients include government departments such as the Ministry of Defence, for which Babcock has refitted and maintained the UK’s nuclear submarine fleet. It also works with the Royal Navy to maintain its non-nuclear fleet and is responsible for constructing the next generation of aircraft carriers.

Civilian and military

Babcock has civilian operations too. Volvo is one such client, in this case a partner in a South African-based business producing earth-moving equipment that fits its interest in mining, energy and construction in Africa. It also recently signed a 10-year contract, worth around £200m, with the BBC to support TV and radio transmission and distribution worldwide.

Nearer to home it maintains the UK’s Advanced Gas-Cooled Reactors (AGRs) and is involved in the UK rail industry through its work with Network Rail.
