The overview

SJ Berwin was founded in the 1980s and has grown from its original five-partner origins to a major international firm; it is well respected in the City. It now employs over a thousand staff, including 400 lawyers and 150 partners.

Its award-winning headquarters is in Queen Street Place London, with panoramic views from the roof terrace; but it also has a considerable European presence and more recently established offices in Dubai, Hong Kong and Shanghai.

Core business areas

What are its strengths? While real estate, banking and venture capital are its core areas, the media and intellectual property teams have also secured some high profile deals, such as one advising games manufacturer Nintendo on anti-piracy measures. SJ Berwin was one of the first City firms to embrace private equity and fund formation work.

The firm has also achieved recent exposure, thanks to its work with British Land, on the development of one of London skyline’s more recent oddities, the Cheesegrater.
