The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) is a management consulting firm with 74 offices in 42 countries. It had revenues of over $3 billion in 2010. BCG was set up as the management and consulting division of the Boston Safe Deposit and Trust Company in 1963.
BCG made its name in strategy consulting, but these days it is just as likely to provide advice on corporate finance, operations or post-merger integration, as it now offers a wide range of capabilities.
The firm works with clients across a variety of industries, from automotive to insurance, serving both public and private sector clients. Its recent report on organisational reform for the US Securities and Exchange Commission is one high-profile example.

Employees are expected to work hard and there is a significant amount of travel involved. While this varies from project to project, the firm comments that a typical week might involve spending two nights (three days) away from home.
That said, BCG has won awards that support its view of itself as an enjoyable and inclusive place to work; it has won a variety of awards, including a place in Fortune magazine’s ‘100 Best Companies to Work For’. Initiatives that originated with consultants and then received support from management have been successful in the past. One notable example is the London Women’s Initiative, which aims to make consulting an attractive long-term career for women. This has been commended by the president and CEO of BCG, Hans-Paul Bürkner.
The firm has a history of developing innovative business ideas and continues to invest heavily in research. Theories developed by BCG under Bruce Henderson in the 1970s became popular in business schools. Today, the firm produces large numbers of reports on industries and markets, many of which are available free of charge. The company’s ‘strategy institute’ has close links with academia, and a number of current and former employees have published books on business and management theory.
