Your university Job Shop

There are over 100 job shops or job zones in universities across the country, usually found in or near your careers service or students' union. They can put you in touch with local temporary jobs and offer advice in getting that all-important part-time job.

Eighty-seven per cent of students now expect to work on a part-time or temporary basis or during vacation periods, to support their studies, reduce student debt, and develop their own work based skills and learning.

As well as earning you valuable wonga, part-time work can boost your employment prospects. It will open your eyes to life in the real world, and can be used as evidence of your ability to deal with customers, handle cash and work in a team.

Your careers service may house a job shop (or there might be one in your students’ union) – if not, find out what other information they hold on local employers. This could range from directories of organisations to immediate vacancy notices. Job shop staff will be able to help you with the practical stuff, such as CV writing, interview techniques and minimum wage queries.
