TARGETchances: work experience with a difference

Make contacts, experience working life and get the answers to all your career questions through TARGETchances events.

Getting a foot in the door when you’re looking for a graduate job can be tricky – employers often ask for relevant work experience as well as the right skills and qualifications. TARGETchances events give you the opportunity to get that experience and improve your skills: they’re all-expenses-paid events offering insight into a wide range of careers and they’re supported by some of the best-known companies in the UK.

There are events covering a wide variety of industries, including real estate, investment banking, IT, consulting, law, retail, engineering, retail banking, technology, the public sector, fund management – there’s something for everyone.

The events introduce you to the realities of working life. As well as taking part in business-based games and case study exercises, you’ll be able to meet recruiters and professionals and get expert answers to your questions.

You’ll be able to meet recruiters and professionals and get expert answers to your questions.

You’ll also take part in practical workshops designed to build the knowledge you need to succeed at interview, and experts will be on hand to offer advice on CVs, application forms and interviews.

Attending an event can also boost your confidence. ‘The informal situations allow you to ask any questions, however silly, and to network at ease,’ says Jessica, a particpant from Brunel University. ‘Each representative from the different companies was friendly and inspirational as well as willing to answer any questions.’

‘I was worried that my lack of knowledge in fund management would be an issue,’ adds Greg, a sport science and management student from Loughborough University. ‘But I learned a lot in a short space of time and in an interesting way.’

Work experience always looks good on your CV. Recruiters like to see it as it shows that students are proactive and that they have taken the time to learn about the industry before applying.

Events are held throughout the year. Visit the TARGETchances website for more information or ask at your university careers service.
